Congratulations, Niklas Tappauf, PhD Candidate, for your outstanding work in spearheading the data analysis, data interpretation, and manuscript writing for this longitudinal multi-omics cohort study with pediatric patients with intestinal failure and receiving parenteral nutrition.
This study, funded by a BCCHRI Healthy Starts Catalyst Grant and co-led by Drs Hannah Piper and Yvonne Lamers, was designed to identify blood analytes and gut microbiome signatures that may serve as predictors of intestinal adaptation.
The findings revealed that blood metabolomic profiles —particularly urea cycle metabolites, creatinine, asparagine, and metabolites of the tryptophan-kynurenine pathway— show promise for predicting intestinal function. Validation of the blood analytes in larger studies is warranted to confirm their predictive value and clinical use.
